The Spanish river has weed beds, rocky shoreline, sandy shoals, deep holes of 20 to 50 feet, islands and bays; basically, a lot of variety. Of course, if you get out into the North Channel the variety becomes endless; lots of bays and rocky shoals, for the adventurous angler to explore.
We have excellent fishing for Smallmouth Bass; experience the thrill of a big Smallmouth taking to the sky. There are plenty of Northern Pike; hooking one of these "logs" will really make your day, especially if you manage to get it in the boat. The Spanish River is a Walleye spawning river with a very good fish population. The Walleye may challenge you to find them, but when you do there is likely to be a whole school of them. There are perch and other pan fish - crappies too.
There are other fish as well: Musky, Sturgeon, and Catfish. Some guests come prepared with downriggers and go out into the deep water of the North Channel for Lake Trout, Rainbows, and Salmon.
The Blue Heron is the only resort on the lower Spanish River, only ten minutes to Lake Huron's North Channel by boat. You will be able to fish in relative seclusion without disturbances from other water craft. Boat traffic on the river is minimal.
Bait, gas, oil, ice, and fishing licences are available here. Fish cleaning is easy in our cleaning house with running water and electricity.
Fishing in the Spanish River is only allowed from the third Saturday in May to the end of September. Because our river is a Walleye spawning river, it is classified as a sanctuary from Oct. 1 to mid-May.
However, you can still fish in Gagan's Bay or in the North Channel. Some of our guests like to come up in October and fish in the North Channel for Northern Pike and Jumbo Perch.
Walleye season opens the third Saturday in May. You can also fish for Northern Pike starting at that time. Bass season opens the last Saturday in June.
BOATS & MOTORS RENTAL
Our 14 and 16 foot deep-V aluminum boats with 15 to 25 hp motors get you to your favourite spot fast. They are safety equipped too. You can launch your own boat if you prefer. We have a good cement boat launch and a series of floating docks. There is no charge for launching your boat.
